In this project, I created a series of three illustrations to advertise a new lipstick by Chanel in the style of Art Nouveau. I then created printed ads, social media posts, and a banner ad with these illustrations.
In the beginning of the design process, I researched the characteristics of the Art Nouveau movement and took note of the recurring motifs and color palette of the style. Artists from the period often used earthy tones ranging from pastel hues to a more vibrant palette. It is heavily inspired by the organic shapes and sinuous lines found in nature. The mood of Art Nouveau is sensuous and characterized by elaborate ornamentation.
In my sketchbook, I created several thumbnail sketches to help me picture the overall mood of the advertisements. After I had selected 3 different compositions, I dived into creating the illustrations on Clip Studio Paint. During the process, I had to experiment with different color combinations to match the overall mood as I had imagined. I tried to the keep the linework fluid while incorporating natural elements.
Printed Advertisements
In my final designs, I reused the same color palette. Specifically, I experimented with shades of green, yellow, and brown that evoke natural elements. I used a combination of cool and warm tones to create contrast between the background, the person and the lipstick (the focal point). I arranged the text on a curved path so that it does not break the movement in each composition.
The printed ads would be pages in a magazine, so I have included the Chanel logo, tagline, and the company website for readers who may be interested in the product.
Social Media Posts & Stories
The social media posts have limited text and provide close-ups of the illustrations.
The Instagram stories would be displayed in a series, and followed by the next one as the user tapped on the story.
Banner Advertisement
The banner ad can be used for the company's YouTube channel or displayed on a website.
